This is a course that is aimed at musicians, arts students and professional musical directors who would like to work with children, young people & adults with additional needs
This course may be suitable for health professionals (who have some knowledge of music) working with people with disabilities, older people and people with dementia or in the area of special education
Course content will be music focused & will assume a level of musicianship, sight reading, singing & musicality
- Suggestions for resources for working in this area
- An overview of the various types of disability
- An introduction to dementia
- Some research around music, singing & disability
- Appropriate language to use when working in this area
- Utilising volunteers
- Strategies for working with people with additional needs through music
- Conducting & leadership techniques for working with choirs for older singers & singers with conditions such as dementia & other additional needs
- Case study: youth choirs for children & young people with special needs
- Case study: Music Matters’ choirs in St. Michael’s House
- Opportunities for questions & answers
- Case study: NO LIMITS hip hop project for people with additional needs
- Involving families & carers
- Type of repertoire used in these choirs
- Case study: Musical Memories choirs for older people, people with dementia, their families & carers
- The settings for these choirs (such as schools, nursing homes, in the community)
- Practical “hands-on” experiential workshops with professionals working in this area
- Information about job opportunities in this area
- Testimonials & evidence from these types of specialised choirs & community projects
A certificate of attendance will be awarded to those participants who complete BOTH days of this training course (different topics covered on each day)
